With 30 years of furniture restoration and repairs behind him, Brian explained how he became such a skilled craftsman: “I served my apprenticeship in Newbury with Claude Hine, which is a name many people will recognise. I left the Clere school aged 15 and joined Claude in his workshop in West Street. His business was known as AC Hine, but everyone knew him as Claude."
he continues “He had been in business for 40 years already by then and was a real craftsmen and he taught me everything he knew and when he retired he helped me start my own business and passed on many of his clients."
“I was just ‘Brian Matthews’ when I first started and I was working from my parent’s house in Ball Hill and I did that for 10 years before I moved to Sandleford Farm and I worked there, where my son Ben joined me as my apprentice. That is nice, being able to pass on my skills much as Claude did for me.”
“The job is always interesting,” explained Brian. “Just the other day I was repairing an antique chair which had been chewed up by a dog; one arm had completely gone and I had to replace it while making sure it matched and looked as old as the remaining arm.
