Experience that you can count on

With 30 years of furniture restoration and repairs behind him, Brian explained how he became a passionate and skilled craftsman: “I served my apprenticeship in Newbury with Claude Hine, which is a name many people from Newbury will recognise. I left school at the age of 15 and joined Claude in his workshop in West Street Newbury. His business was known as AC Hine, but everyone knew him as Claude”.

“At the time that I joined AC Hine/Claude, he had already been in business for 40 years, Claude  was a real craftsmen and he taught me everything he knew and when he retired he helped me start Matthews Restoration and passed on many of his clients.  It is the skills that Claude gave me and the trust he showed me during my early days that I will always be grateful to Claude for"

“When I first started  out on my own I was working from a shed in my back garden in Newbury and I did this for 10 years until this shed became a fully fledged workshop and this workshop grew in size depriving us of a garden.  I then moved to a unit on Sandleford Farm where I continued to expand such that I had to move into another unit on an Industrial park, where I am today.  Recently and as business has continued to be good and as my reputation has grown, I am proud to say that I have restored another old tradition and that is; my son joined me in 2005 as an apprentice and I was honoured and pleased to rename “Matthews Restoration” to “Matthews Restoration & Son”  This is particularly gratifying as I am now able to pass on my French Polishing and furniture restoration skills much as Claude did for me.”

Brian Matthews & Son are French polishing, modern and antique furniture restoration specialists.  They offer you the kind of skilled, personal service that has in today’s world virtually disappeared.  Brian and his son have a deep rooted affection and understanding of antiques and the meaning and personal value that such items have.

Brian & Ben’s Passion “This is a vocation”

“The work is always interesting,” explained Brian. “Recently I was repairing an antique chair which had one badly damaged spindle, this had to be re-carved, replaced and French Polishing at our Newbury workshop, see the example bottom left, I had to ‘turn' a new piece and replace it while making sure it matched and looked as old as the remaining arm”.

Brian and his son are very passionate about French polish and furniture restoration, if you have any enquiry they would love to help, as few enjoy their work more than Brian and Ben.
